Finally I have got to getting the last of the Fundamentals to Triathlon Success on to paper or your computer screen I should say. I have so much great stuff going on with coaching, travel, clinics, moving into a new house and the best news of all that I’m going to be a Dad come February that I’m a little behind where I wanted to be with these posts and the launch of the members area of the website.
This coming weekend we will be opening the members area. It’s going to be a very busy back end of the week 🙂
Anyway on to the final fundamental to success. We look at one of the most overlooked aspects of health and performance when it comes to endurance sports. This is the simple act of looking after your body. We tend to use the excuse of ‘no time’ to do the crucial things that will keep our body healthy, happy and performing.
Body Maintenance Fundamental
One of the most overlooked aspects of health and performance when it comes to endurance sports is the simple act of looking after your body. We tend to use the excuse of ‘no time’ to do the crucial things that will keep our body healthy, happy and performing.
If you don’t make the time for implementing some simple strategies then at some stage your body will sideline you. It’s not a matter of IF but purely a matter of WHEN! Training, modern day life stresses (diet, lack of sleep, work etc) all break our bodies down.
Recovery, regeneration or as I like to term it Body Maintenance is a topic I have researched in great depths over the years as it was one of the things that I had to understand to help rid myself of injury after injury. Body Maintenance is as the term suggests, looking after your body. When applied following some principles (not methods) your body will give you superior long-term health, quick recovery and performance.
There are four main principles when it comes to superior body maintenance. Two of them have already been discussed as fundamentals to success! They are Training and Nutrition. The other two are Sleep and Soft Tissue Work.
Sleep is the most underutilised free form of optimal body maintenance and performance out there. There is many things such as the above principle that can affect sleep quality. There is a lot to it and more of this is discussed inside the members area. However here are simple strategies you can apply immediately.
- Aim to get as many pre midnight sleep hours as possible (these are considered more important then post midnight sleep hours)
- Get 7-9 hours sleep every night
- Maintain the same to-bed and awake time pattern when these are inconsistent it can be the cause of great fatigue.
Soft Tissue Work is creating optimal tissue health with MCT Myofascial Compression Technique which is similar to self myofascial release (self massage) but differs in that there is a programming element behind it. This is a simple yet effective way of treating the body using some simple and proven tools and methodologies such as those at TPTherapy that will help give your body superior health benefits, quicker recovery from session to session and increased performance. The members area has an in-depth section on body management techniques.
As you can now see, performance and health is a multifaceted approach. There is lots of science behind it but our job is to wade through that, providing you with real world results orientated effective and efficient techniques that you can easily apply. Sure, many of these take work, as does anything worth attaining!
