Your best will never be enough unless it’s always enough – David Roche

Today I have my ultra run coach David Roche back on the podcast talking about Megan and his book “the Happy Runner” (which is available now) which in my mind is required reading for all of us endurance athletes. If you want to enjoy your training and racing more. This book is a must-have. Even though David is using running and being a happy runner… you can just change running for Triathlete or cyclist or whatever suits. It all fits.

Charlotte and I got lucky and got an advanced copy… and Charlotte even got a quote on the back cover of the book! I’m so thankful we got an advance copy as it greatly helped me leading into my 110k race here in Whistler and then for my recent 100 miler. How? I was getting caught up in being results focused. When it just didn’t matter and was adding weight to my shoulders that would have made results harder to come by and ultimately was hurting happiness. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m competitive. I have bulldog determination and somehow when it comes to sports, I have persistent self-belief. David helped me with simple self-acceptance and my results have come from doing the work and controlling what I can.

Results matter but ultimately they don’t and while we must strive for goals and results… the striving is the FUN part.

The book has two parts. The first part is all based on the rules of being a happy runner and this is the part of the book that helped me more than I might have believed possible. Sure I love part two when David and Megan get into running principles, but the ‘Rules’ from part one make for a more enjoyable athletic life.
