Self Myofascial Release

In simple speak SMR is really just self massage. Self Myofascial Release is a form of body work that with the right tools allows you eliminate pain, increase range of motion, recreate optimal elasticity while also enhancing structural integrity.

Fascia is a soft tissue component of the connective tissue system that permeates the human body. By applying pressure on the fascia we can release built up tension caused by physical activity.

SMR is made possible using the TPT Performance Therapy Tools due to what is known as autogenic inhibition. The Golgi tendon organ or GTO for short is a mechanoreceptor found at the muscle-tendon junction and it is highly sensitive to changes in tension within the muscle.

When tension increase to the point of high injury risk (i.e. muscle tear or tendon rupture) the GTO stimulates muscle spindle to relax the muscle in question. This reflex is autogenic inhibition.

By using the TPT Performance Therapy Tools we can stimulate this muscle tension causing the GTO to come into play and relax the muscle.

Muscles need to be strong but they also need to be pliable and retain their elasticity for optimal performance and to avoid potential injury. SMR and massage provided by the TPT Tools will improve muscle length and with consistent use will also offer the benefits of breaking down soft tissue adhesions, scar tissue (areas of increased density) and allowing for optimal delivery of oxygen and nutrients thus increasing power.

SMR using the TPT Tools offers a highly effective inexpensive and convenient way to both decrease adhesions and scar tissue accumulation and eliminate what is already present on a daily basis.

What's important to note is that we didn't get these built up areas of density, inelasticity and scar tissue overnight so we wont get rid of them overnight either (you will notice acute benefits) however with diligence, the right information/methodology and mind set to work on these tight, inelastic muscles, and fascia you will definitely see massive returns for your efforts.

Performance enhancement is possible due to increasing the quality of our muscle tissue. A pliable elastic muscle has more effective and efficient movement patterns. Built up areas of density within the muscles create friction and a muscle that doesn't slide relative to other muscles, joints and tendons. This can cause energy leaks, which in turn reduce performance. If the body has to create greater force to create the desired range of motion deemed necessary for the specific skill then we are potentially wasting energy that could be better used. Imagine the energy cost over an Ironman due to movement restriction caused by soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue!

With TPT Performance Therapy Tools we focus on treating the problems or potential problems rather than the symptoms. We do this by force feeding blood and oxygen into the belly of the muscle. A healthy muscle means good blood flow and oxygen flow. Good blood and oxygen flow means increased muscle length and efficient movement patterns, which equal more power and who doesn't want that!

Manipulation Tips:

  • It's not how hard you push; it's how deep you breathe.

  • If you don't breathe deeply, the products will not be as effective.

  • You must keep the muscle group relaxed while performing the manipulation.

  • After a manipulation, get up and walk around in order to circulate blood to the area that was just worked. The blood flow and the oxygen from your deep breathing combine to create the elasticity in your muscles.

  • For best results, perform manipulations before and after training, as well as within an hour and a half before going to bed.
